Detroit to Stratford – $40 Return Bus Service

“Nini Lisy’s recent trip to the Stratford Festival was similar to others she has taken since 1989…What was different this time was Lisy’s mode of transportation. Lisy and her husband, Joe, boarded a sleek new Stratford-sponsored bus that picked them up and dropped them off just a few miles from their St. Clair Shores home. She says it helped make this year’s trip one of the best ever.” – A great feature on our direct Detroit to Stratford bus service from the Detroit Free Press. Read here: http://on.freep.com/1jLycXH

Press Release | Stage management pioneer Jack Merigold dies at 91

December 12, 2013Jack Merigold, part of the Stratford Festival’s first stage management team, died Wednesday, December 11, at age 91 from pancreatic cancer. Jack was well loved by many generations of his Festival family and will be greatly missed.

“Jack was the dean of Canadian stage managers,” says Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino. “He worked with the Stratford Festival’s founding Artistic Director, Tyrone Guthrie, in Stratford, New York and London. Jack’s skill and precision were equaled only by his energy and so he was an asset to any theatre company. But for a new and growing theatre scene in Canada he was a pioneer.

“Jack attended Stratford productions, play readings and Birmingham Conservatory presentations faithfully to his last days. He will be missed by the entire Canadian theatre family but nowhere more than here at the Stratford Festival where his journey started.”

Mr. Merigold was born in Hamilton on November 7, 1922. He served in the RCAF during the Second World War and helped produce the Sky’s the Limit Air Force comedy shows. When Mr. Merigold returned to Canada in 1946, he was accepted into the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, where he completed a two-year program in voice and acting. There were virtually no professional opportunities for actors in the country at that time, so upon graduation, he and some fellow graduates of the program formed a touring group called the People’s Repertory Company, which toured from 1948 to ’49 with a converted war-time dental truck carrying eight people and four theatrical sets to town halls and city auditoriums across Ontario. It was with this group that he first stage managed a production.

Mr. Merigold quickly made a name for himself and was hired as an assistant stage manager by Tyrone Guthrie for the Festival’s inaugural season in 1953. He soon became Dr. Guthrie’s stage manager and their working relationship stretched beyond Stratford to include 12 productions in New York and four in London.

Mr. Merigold was with the Festival for 16 seasons between 1953 and 1976, in a variety of roles. He was the production stage manager for the Avon Theatre and for opera, and later served as the purchasing agent. He was the assistant to the director on 1960’s HMS Pinafore and 1961’s The Pirates of Penzance, a production in which he also appeared as an actor. In 1974 he directed This Is the Rill Speaking at the Third Stage (now the Tom Patterson Theatre).

His acting career included a recurring role on CBC TV’s Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town and appearances on the Wayne and Shuster TV specials. He worked with Lorne Greene at the Jupiter Theatre and performed at the Eaton Auditorium, the Royal Alexandra Theatre and the Belmont Theatre. He was the co-creator of a program called Theatre in the Home, which brought professional performances into retirement homes.

As a stage manager he also travelled coast to coast with Spring Thaw. Later in his career, after leaving the Stratford Festival, he served as the chief administrator of the Bayview Playhouse in Toronto. Mr. Merigold was a longtime member of ACTRA and was awarded Life Membership in Canadian Actor’s Equity for his outstanding contribution to the arts.

Mr. Merigold was always happy to share a story or two about his life in the theatre. He recounted tales of working with the greatest performers in the world and of meeting Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe, but he said his greatest pleasure was giving young people a start in the theatre. Indeed many remember Jack as a great mentor, who gave them guidance that served them throughout their careers – as well as some very good laughs.

The Stratford Festival is dedicating the 2014 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Mr. Merigold, who played Puck at the beginning of his acting career. Details of a memorial will follow at a later date.

Press Release | The Merchant of Venice begins previews Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino at the helm

July 30, 2013… Issues of intolerance and the vengeance it provokes lie at the heart of Shakespeare’s most controversial play, The Merchant of Venice, which begins previews Tuesday, July 30, at the Festival Theatre.

Directed by Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino, who has already had tremendous success with this season’s sold-out run of Mary Stuart, this production will be set in Italy in the 1930s.

“My own parents were children in Italy when the National Fascist Party introduced its anti-Semitic race laws in 1938,” says Mr. Cimolino. “The rise of Fascism and Nazism in that relatively recent era was fuelled by the very same thinking that Shakespeare probes in The Merchant of Venice: attitudes toward ‘otherness’ that range from genteel disdain to racist loathing. And those same attitudes underlie so many of the terrible conflicts that bedevil our world today. This play challenges us to search our own consciences and ask ourselves how far we have really progressed in the centuries since it was written.”

Having invested heavily in an overseas trading venture, Antonio, a Venetian merchant, cannot immediately oblige his friend Bassanio when the latter asks for a loan to finance his wooing of Portia, an heiress who lives in Belmont. Antonio therefore in turn seeks to borrow the necessary funds from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender whom he has always treated with the utmost contempt. Shylock grants him the loan – on condition that, in the event of default, he must forfeit a pound of his flesh. Antonio learns a hard lesson in loyalty when the revenge-seeking Shylock comes to collect and he is unable to pay.

Mr. Cimolino has planned the 2013 season around a cluster of themes, with several of the plays examining how we reach across our differences to find our common humanity with people we have identified as the “other.” In this case, the story of a despised outsider who seeks horrific vengeance for the abuse to which he has been subjected makes The Merchant of Venice a particularly apt choice within this season’s playbill.

“It seems to me that Shakespeare is really trying to understand how we make some people the ‘other,’ ” says Mr. Cimolino. “The Merchant of Venice doesn’t just warn us against judging books by their covers; it even goes so far as to suggest an inverse relationship between essential worth and surface appeal. From caskets to complexions, appearances ‘entrap the wisest.’ Throughout the play, people are judged by the colour of their skin, by their nationality and, of course, by their religion. As one might expect, such discrimination causes great pain; it also breeds a desire for revenge.”

The cast features Tom McCamus as Antonio, Scott Wentworth as Shylock, Tyrell Crews as Bassanio, Sara Farb as Jessica, Michelle Giroux as Portia, Jonathan Goad as Gratiano, Ron Pederson as Launcelot Gobbo, Tyrone Savage as Lorenzo and Sophia Walker as Nerissa.

The artistic team includes Set Designer Douglas Paraschuk, Costume Designer Charlotte Dean, Lighting Designer Robert Thomson, Composer Keith Thomas, Sound Designer Todd Charlton and Fight Director John Stead.
